Rain and puddles: reduce a dog's exposure to leptospirosis

Risk changes with location, rodents, and the dog's activities. Ask the veterinarian about vaccination and what to do after possible exposure.

CDC explains that dogs can contract leptospirosis through contact with urine from infected animals or contaminated water and soil. Rain does not create the disease, but puddles, flooding, and rodents can increase opportunities for exposure.

Quick guide: Rain and puddles: reduce a dog's exposure to leptospirosis
AvoidKeep the dog from drinking or playing in standing water.
CleanProvide clean water and reduce rodent access.
ConsultDiscuss vaccination based on local risk and routine.
Next stepKeep a dog out of group care after fever, vomiting, or lethargy.

During walks, prevent the dog from drinking puddle water or exploring standing water. Carry clean water. At home, store food so it does not attract rodents and address garbage or pooled water in patios.

Ask the veterinarian whether vaccination fits the dog's risk. Location, travel, field outings, and contact with water matter. The decision should not depend entirely on whether a particular month has been rainy.

Fever, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, pain, yellow color, or changes in urination call for veterinary care. Mention recent contact with standing water or rodents. Keep the dog out of daycare while an illness is being investigated.

Before check-in at Villa CanInna, disclose recent exposure and symptoms. The health sheet is not a box-checking exercise. It helps decide whether the dog can join the group or needs to remain home and receive care.

The bacteria can remain in water or soil contaminated by urine from infected animals. A puddle does not have to look dirty. Keep dogs from drinking standing water, cover wounds before going out, and rinse paws with water afterward. Improvised disinfectants on irritated skin can create a separate problem.

Ask the veterinarian whether leptospirosis vaccination fits local risk and the dog's lifestyle. Fever, lethargy, vomiting, urine changes, unusual thirst, or yellow eyes and gums need a veterinary call. Wear gloves when cleaning urine from a sick dog and follow clinical instructions because some strains can infect people.
